ONE ROOM CHALLENGE | WEEK ONE
To be honest I’m feeling a little overwhelmed with all the One Room Challenge rules and guidelines, that said, I’m going to force myself out of my comfort zone because I can plan until the cows come home but I have trouble finishing things without hard deadlines.
That’s why I’m participating in the Better Homes & Garden One Room Challenge this fall. I’ll be refreshing one of our guest rooms over the course of the next six weeks. Since I’m a couple of days late to the party my plan isn’t totally set in stone but I’ll share what I have right now!
This is a mockup I did a while ago, this will most likely change, but it’s the general vibe I’m going for. My goal is to do this room on a budget, I have all the student debt, so I’m going to source some of this stuff from my own home and upgrade when it’s feasible. The items linked will not necessarily be what I’m using but I’ll try to DIY it to save a buck.
As of right now the room serves as a junk closet since our other guest room was cleaned out entirely for a long term guest. It’s a basic white room and as far as furniture and decor go it’s pretty minimal, I have a vintage metal bed frame, an unfinished wood nightstand and an IKEA lamp. We stuck a shelf in the corner because we didn’t have any other place for it so I’ll have to find a new home for that and replace the drop down construction bulb with an actual light fixture.
DIY PROJECTS
Bed frame - I picked up this bed off the side of the road and if I’m not mistaken this is a civil war era rope bed. The house was being sold and the company handling the auction didn’t find much value in the bed because it had been Frankenstein’ed together and did not have original rails. I’m building new rails to match the bed and trying to figure out how to make my existing full sized mattress work.
Nightstands - I have some tall nightstands that work well with the height of the bed, they’re unfinished pine from the Mill Store purchased over a decade ago. The drawers don’t work very well but I think with a coat of paint and some new drawer pulls they’ll work just fine in a guest room.
Table lamps - I picked up to small table lamps from Goodwill a couple months ago. They are so generic/basic but I have I mind to papermache /paper clay the base into a more organic shape and used the Jaci Daily “found pot” technique to dress them up. I will have to source new shades for them since the ones they came with were actually different colors. I may either hook these up with smart bulbs and an Amazon Echo Dot or just scrap the idea and go for a wall sconce, only time will tell but it will definitely come down to functionality.
Paint (subject to change) - Piano Room (trim) & Table Linen (walls & ceiling)
Faux Olive Tree & basket (similar)
Nightstand - pictured & budget version
Bed (similar)
Rug (similar)
The image above is a great inspiration photo for me, obviously the antique bed is a big focus for me and I love how Courtney mixes up the antique with the new more contemporary pieces.
Some of the other ideas I’m considering are paneling the ceiling to give the room some visual interest and roman clay instead of traditional paint to give the walls some texture. It’s all going to depend on cost but I think this is what’s going to make a budget refresh look super luxe. I’m going to crunch some numbers this week and try to sell some things around the house in an effort to transform this space.
